ELECTROLYSIS

Electrolysis hair removal works by permanently destroying each individual hair follicle with a very fine, disposable and sterile probe combined with direct current. After this process, the hair follicle can no longer reproduce. Usually, a series of sessions is needed to completely prevent hair growth. If hair growth is caused by a hormonal imbalance, the process may be slower but is still possible. It is more commonly used to treat smaller areas, although very versatile as can treat all hair colours including white, grey or blonde hair.

Frequently asked questions
Electrolysis Hair Removal
Electrolysis is the science of permanent hair removal utilising a probe device. A fine, sterile probe is inserted into the hair follicle. Then a small amount of current or heat, depending on the modality used, is discharged. This destroys the hair follicle and prevents it from producing another hair.
Electrolysis treats each hair follicle individually with a very fine, disposable, sterile probe to permanently destroy the follicle’s ability to reproduce, thereby eradicating hair growth on completion of the course of treatment.
Laser tends to treat large areas of skin which can reduce hair growth, but not remove all of the hair permanently. It is termed hair reduction rather than hair removal. Both electrolysis and laser work well in conjunction with each other in some circumstances. Permanent hair removal with electrolysis requires a longer course of treatment.
Laser/IPL treatment requires further treatment when the hair grows back.
LASER can provide a permanent reduction of hair. Up to 85% of the hair can be permanently removed.
In addition to this, many people and hair types are not suitable for LASER e.g. fair, blonde, red or grey hair. Electrolysis will treat all hair types.
The number of treatments required will vary from person to person as each client will have a different density of hair growth (e.g. there may be between 50 hairs and 500 hairs packed into a small area of skin tissue, whilst some clients will have less hair which is spaced out). This means that each treatment course will vary, and therefore no actual figure can be put on the number of treatments required, but you will quickly feel and see a difference giving you the confidence to continue with your treatment course.
You will need to have regular appointments over a period of time (at least a year if not more) for most areas. Not all our hair is growing at the same time, and it can be quite a shock to find that those 3 or 4 hairs on your chin could actually be 30 or more hairs ‘taking turns’ to grow!
Generally there is some redness and a little localised swelling immediately following electrolysis. This will disappear in time depending on the skin sensitivity and skin type. Generally the next day your skin will show very little sign of treatment, however some people may see tiny reddish brown pinprick scabs, especially on body areas or where hairs are distorted or ingrown. These scabs drop off naturally within a few days to a week depending on the individual’s healing ability. If however you notice any unexpected after effects then please mention it to myself.
Do not work out or go to the gym or exercise within two hours of your appointment. Excess sweat can interfere with the treatment. It is best if the skin is not coated in anything, including deodorants, antiperspirants, or sweat.
• Any skin treatments including facials, microdermabrasion, skin rejuvenation treatments, or peels should not be performed within one week of the electrolysis session.
• Do not use Retin-A or any acne cream 3-5 days before and after the electrolysis session.
• Do not wear make-up, foundation or sun block to the electrolysis session.
• Skin should be cleansed the day of the electrolysis session. Loofah or lightly scrub the skin a few days before the electrolysis session.
• Do not pick at your skin before your treatment.
To maintain comfort and promote the best results, here are some aftercare recommendations:
• Avoid any heat treatments such as sauna/steam/sun-bed.
• Lightly apply Aloe Vera gel following the treatment.
• Drinks lots of water to stay hydrated.
• Eat within one hour after the electrolysis. This will keep you grounded and the nervous system will balance itself automatically.
Following your treatment, there is a possibility of redness in the treated area. This is both normal and temporary and is part of the electrolysis process. Different body and face hairs have different frequency levels. Redness will depend on your skin type and on the areas of your body that have higher or lower frequency to remove the hairs.
